Hot Pants & Boy Shorts for Spring/Summer 2010

Many recent fashion trends have pointed to it, and given the popularity of the likes of lingerie as outerwear it should really come as no surprise. Yes, hem lines continually become shorter as time marches on, but Spring 2010 may be the first season where hem lines can be predominantly measured in negative figures.

Hot Pants:

Boy Shorts & Short Shorts

(Short shorts and boy shorts on the Blumarine and Balmain Spring 2010 catwalks)

If hot pants don't take your fancy the consider boy shorts an alternative. Taking their inspiration from boy shorts knickers the cut is akin to hot pants, though differentiated by a featuring a hemline that doesn't curve up the body. Think of short shorts , just not in denim and without the rips, and you're on the money.

Dutch Paint-By-Numbers Dress

Posted by Rachel on Friday, Dec 18, 2009 under

Dutch Design Coloring Dress

There are many things that remind us of childhood- hopscotch, summer, Peeps. But one oft forgotten arbiter of our youth is the paint-by-numbers drawing guide- for many their first introduction to the art world. These guides allowed you to re-create famous pictures and scenes, or choose your own color scheme to create something totally your own. It’s this DIY spirit which fuels the new pet project of fashion designer Berber Soepboer and graphic designer Michiel Schuurman, who have masterminded the world’s first Paint-By-Numbers dress, sold out of Schuurman’s Studio in The Netherlands.

The dress, which retails at 250 Euros a pop (and comes complete with your own nifty set of textile markers) is sold in a standard black and white template, which wearers can make-up to match an outfit, skin tone, or season. The creators of the dress hope this will encourage the wearer to let their inner muses free and flex some artistic muscle. -PSFK

The Invisible Shoe

Posted by Rachel on Monday, Dec 14, 2009 under

The Invisible Shoe

To footwear designer Andreia Chaves , each shoe is an individual work of art.  Raised in the busy metropolis of Sao Paulo , Brazil – Chaves understands that beauty can be found in chaos, a concept that reveals itself in her footwear designs.  She explains this in her own words, "The fact that I grew up in a chaotic city like Sao Paulo, full of contrasts, being in contact with such diversity and constant exposure to different visual inputs, has inspired me in how I think and conceptualize my shoes. Looking at my work, I can clearly see influence coming from my South American sense of versatility.  Also in the mix - what I have been experiencing in Europe . "

The Invisible Shoe ” has a mirrored surface, creating a deceptively obscured optical effect with every step taken.  The chameleon-like façade blends in perfectly with any environment.

DJ Tina T Goes Blonde

Posted by Rachel on Wednesday, Dec 02, 2009 under

DJ Tina T

UNITE had the pleasure of interviewing one of the Top DJs in the country, who also happens to be a HUGE fan of UNITE, DJ Tina T. Recently, Tina took the leap and went from dark to blonde! Here is what she had to say about the transformation...

Photography : Derrickbusch@foxhead.com & fabbgroup.com Hair : Greg (310) 899 - 9041 Makeup : Makeupmandy.com

What inspired the change to go blonde? It's something I've always considered but never had the guts to go through with. My hair dresser suggested it and I trust him, so I decided it was time for a change.

How did people respond? The day I decided to get it done, I went on my facebook and twitter pages to do a poll of how many people think I should go for it and I would say about 98% of people said NO WAY! The ones that were the most against it now think it looks good and it made me realize that people are afraid of change.

What is the biggest change for you in taking care of your hair now? The toner trips me out! I still dont understand how putting dark purple in your hair somehow ends up making it brighter and not purple. Now that its bleached, I have the most crazy bed hair of all time!

What are your favorite UNITE products? UNITE CREAMY Paste for sure! Cant live without that. I also use the NEW MOISTURE Shampoo and Conditioner that keep my blonde looking great!

You did a FANTASTIC job DJing @ UNITE Unveiled in LA at the Mondrian, did you enjoy yourself? That was an awesome event! You know its a good party when people start jumping in the pool!

What are some of your upcoming gigs that you are most excited about? I cant wait for New Years Eve. I will be DJing for The Red Bull No Limits! Travis Pastrana is going to be breaking world records. Should be good times.

What projects are you currently working on in the DJ world? Right now I am really excited about launching Camp Spin Off, which is a week long summer camp where kids ages 12-17 are coming out and learning to DJ. I went to summer camps growing up and cant wait to get back into that environment of cabins, campfires and the outdoors. If this camp was around when i was a teenager, It would have been my dream to attend. You can check out more about it at www.campspinoff.com

Interlocking LEGO Fashion

As “DIY” and “Green” seem to be the two loudest buzz words in marketing and apparel today, it makes sense that eventually someone would come along to merge the two. Stepping up to the challenge is Dutch design duo Fioen Van Balgooi and Berber Soepboer, whose line of “click/fold” dresses called Refinity are literally redefining making a dress “ones own”. Each outfit consists of interlocking parts (much like LEGO) which can be added or taken away from a garment- allowing you to alter it’s design on demand. In addition to providing endless tailoring opportunities, the garments are also earth friendly- making use of “cradle-to-cradle” technology  and  zero waste design. And if this hasn’t already sold you on Refinity, apparently the clothes are also able to hold up to the wear-and-toss mentality of the average consumer. -Laura Feinstein

Lady Gaga & Adam Lambert AMAs

Lady GaGa & Adam Lambert Rocked the AMAs

The Lady Gaga AMA 2009 performance was stunning. Of course, Lady Gaga is used to shocking the world, but that was hard to do in the wake of Adam Lambert's...performance. The most amazing thing about the Lady Gaga AMA performance was of course the artist's costumes.

For his first televised performance since the Season Eight finale of American Idol , Adam Lambert aimed for the kind of controversy Britney Spears and Madonna are known for generating, completely stunning the audience at Los Angeles’ Nokia Theatre and the millions watching the American Music Awards live on ABC with a risqué rendition of “For Your Entertainment.”

Awards show stages have been the site of some of the most memorable — and controversial — performances in recent years. Britney Spears and Madonna stole headlines for their lip-lock at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards, and the 2009 AMAs did not disappoint!

MyStyle 7SECONDS Dry Shampoo

Save Time in the Morning With Dry Shampoo

Some people can go to sleep with their hair in rollers or on top of their head in a scrunchie and wake up with gorgeous volume. Women with finer locks aren't so lucky. Unless they wash their hair in the morning their hair is flat, flat, flat all day!

If you're a fine-haired woman who likes to sleep in, dry shampoo could trim some time from your morning routine. Just shower and blowdry your hair before bed and then spray the product onto your roots when you wake up. Instant volume!

I use Unite Eurotherapy's 7Seconds Dry shampoo for a super quick styling refresher.

Alexandar McQueen From the Paris Runway: Snake Pit

After a creepy film of slithering snakes kicked-off the show, serpent themes were in abundance at Alexander McQueen's spectacular runway presentation, which featured reptile shoes, clothing and elaborately braided hair. The inspiration for the towering 21-cm (8-inch) shoes with their pre-historic appearance was not fetish footwear but something entirely more feminine. A spokesperson at McQueen said the heels were "based on the visualization of a ballerina standing en pointe, even though models stood in a normal position." -WWD

Natalie Portman on Aging In Hollywood and Plastic Surgery

Wearing a pompadour and a Swarovski-studded Calvin Klein Jeans jacket, Natalie Portman looks tough in this sneak peek of the winter 2009/2010 issue of V Magazine, shot by photographer Mario Testino. And in the accompanying interview she’s talking tough, too — about the role of beauty in her industry. “You see people who were stars five years ago and already they’re waning,” Natalie says of the imposed short shelf life of many Hollywood actresses. “As actresses approach 40, it starts becoming really, really difficult.” And while at 28, she’s still years from that marker, she’s ambivalent about plastic surgery in the future. “I would hope not,” she says of whether she’d ever go under the knife. She does not, however, completely rule it out, explaining that she won’t know how she’ll feel as she ages. While wrinkles aren’t a problem yet, she admits, “if I have a pimple I want to get rid of it.” Check out the full interview in V Magazine.  -Mario Testino/V Magazine

Breast Cancer Survivor: Edie Falco

While working on The Sopranos , on September 5, 2003, actress Edie Falco was diagnosed with stage I breast cancer. In overcoming the disease, she discovered many things—not the least of which was a strengthened resolve to become a mother.

The moment a doctor says “We have bad news” is life changing. For me, time stopped. I couldn’t walk. I couldn’t breathe. Luckily I was with my boyfriend, because I would have passed out otherwise.

But then I thought: I am a strong woman. I have resources to get good treatment, so why not me? Perhaps, better me than some single mother of three kids who is working three jobs. I know I can handle this.

Since he opened his first Polo necktie store in 1967, the man formerly known as Ralph Lifshitz has become iconic American designer with his famous short-sleeved collared shirts and classic women's suit. Louis Vuitton RTW Spring 2010

Marc Jacobs, one of fashion’s most fearless designers, who has made luxury wrapped in audacious signage his m.o. at Vuitton. “I think people love to show off,” Jacobs said recently. “No one I know is living such a private existence that they don’t want people to see that they’re carrying the newest bag or wearing the newest clothes. Even if they don’t want to admit it, there’s a kind of joy people get from the recognition.”

In the Vuitton collection he showed on Wednesday, Jacobs went for head-to-toe overstatement — literally, from Guido Palau’s brilliantly cartoonish Afros (each one five smaller wigs sewn together) to equally fanciful shoes — riffs on clogs, moccasins, fleecy slides and loafers — that hinted at comfort while flashing decorative hardware and flopping shearling tufts.

And yes, there were bags. Big, flashy, spectacular bags in leather, canvas and denim done up with tassels and tails and vibrant straps worn slung across the torso. Bags that probably already have waiting lists, because Vuitton live-streamed the show and Jacobs used the opportunity to flaunt the fabulous, love-to-show-it-off merch that keeps the Vuitton coffers brimming over. -WWD

Etheridge, a two-time Grammy winner, multi-platinum recording artist, mom, and breast cancer survivor, has released a greatest hits CD, "The Road Less Traveled," with a song dedicated to breast cancer survivors called "I Run for Life." She donates all record royalties from that song to breast cancer charities. -By:Dalene Entenmann

Breast Cancer Survivor

Even rich and famous women develop breast cancer. The difference between them and us is that many have used their star-wattage to create or support organizations that encourage awareness of and research into this frightening disease.

Christina Applegate, 37

The Emmy-award winning actress, who plays the amnesia-ridden darling in Samantha Who? , was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008 when she was only 36 years old. After undergoing a bilateral mastectomy, the star partnered with a new cause, Right Action for Women Created for women who are at a high risk for breast cancer, the organization funds diagnostic MRIs, a test that may not be covered by insurance. “As a survivor," Applegate has said, "I am committed to helping women access the information and tests they need to beat this disease.”

Fall/Autumn 2009 Trend: Chunky Knits

While colour is often missing from the palette of fashion trends in the colder months, the same cannot be said for texture . As with the colder seasons of yesteryear, texture in the form of chunky knits will be a prevalent feature of Autumn 2009 / Fall 2009. However, as the world puts the economic down turn behind it, several fashion houses are banking on fashioniers being interested in taking their chunky knits to the level of an extreme sport: introducing super chunky knits .

Lam's clothing designs emphasize a feminine, sensuous cut, appeal to a client who prefers a constructed but not overly agressive look. The architect team came up with a delicate, diaphanous ambience where clothes stand out like sculptural objects.

Diane von Furstenberg RTW Spring 2010

Diane von Furstenberg 's global nomad bounced around the north African desert this season, making a sunset stop along the Nile River. Copper, gold, blue and green done with a dusty finish was the color scheme of her 2010 Spring Runway. The bounty of accessories on the runway were one-part Egyptian Queen (armfuls of woven bangles) and one part Greek Goddess (gold laurel wreaths), celebrating the free-spirited traveler that is Diane von Furstenberg.
